  • Latest News from P4C

    Sat 27 Feb 2016
    P.4C love getting their week off to an energising start on a Monday morning with Claire, our IFA coach.  We had a mini Dodge ball and a mini Football tournament side by side which created a lot of excitement and competition amongst our five teams.

    This week marked our last cycle of Activity Based Learning activities in our 'Whatever the weather' topic.  We enjoyed designing umbrellas using our own choice of art materials, maths subtraction games, investigating and recording different water temperatures, creating acrostic weather poems on the iPad and video recording one another presenting a weather forecast for the United Kingdom.

    We have really enjoyed our A.B.L. this topic and look forward to a new set of exciting and interactive activities connected to the World War Two.

  • Mrs L Campbell - A Tribute

    Thu 25 Feb 2016

    It was with very great sadness that we learnt of the sudden and untimely passing of Mrs Lynne Campbell on Wednesday, 18th February 2016.

    Mrs Campbell was appointed as Vice-Principal and P7 teacher in Cairnshill in October 1987 and took up the position in January 1988.  She took over as Acting Principal in September 2007 on the retirement of Mr A B Gilliland.  Mrs Campbell held the post of Principal until she took early retirement during the 2014/15 academic year.

    During her years in Cairnshill, Mrs Campbell made significant contribution to school life.  Firstly, as a P6 and P7 classroom teacher, she expected high standards from all her pupils.  Children were encouraged to work hard and achieve success across the curriculum.  Mrs Campbell was also greatly involved in extra-curricular activities and coached hockey after school.  She participated in and led many residential trips for P6 and P7 pupils, both within Northern Ireland and further afield.  Many hundreds of pupils remember her fondly as someone who supported and encouraged them in their final years of primary school.

    Cairnshill has lost a valued friend and colleague and we extend our deepest sympathy to Lynne’s family circle.

  • Visit from Education Minister

    Thu 18 Feb 2016

    We were delighted to welcome Education Minister John O'Dowd, Junior Minister Emma Pengelly and MLA Máirtin Ó'Muilleoir to school today, along with other representatives from the Department of Education and members of the local press.

    During their visit, they were impressed by our school choir who performed for them.  Our visitors also had time to visit a number of classrooms and learn about the great work which goes on in Cairnshill.  We had the opportunity to discuss the need for a new school building with the Education Minister and were delighted that he is in agreement with this.  We are keen to improve the facilities that we offer our pupils and a new-build could also solve the on-going parking and access issues.  Obviously there are many other schools who also need new buildings so, while the Minister's words are encouraging, there are still hurdles to overcome.

    MLA Máirtin Ó'Muilleoir shared his views of his visit to Cairnshill on the Sinn Féin website:- http://www.sinnfein.ie/contents/38553

  • Wilson's Automobile Empire - P6W

    Fri 12 Feb 2016
    P6W put away their books this week as their classroom was transformed into "Wilson's Automobile Empire".  The class were tasked to use their prior knowledge and research of forces and energy to design and construct a balloon car.

    Small design teams were busy at work, planning, creating and modifying designs.  (They learned as much from their mistakes as their successes.)  The hacksaws and glue guns were in overdrive as extra balloons were attached to maximise power source and number plates were added- just for style!

    In the end, the winning team's car travelled a massive 5.89m. It won because it was light, aerodynamic, very simple and small.  Simplicity was the key!

    The next day the teams had to reform to storyboard and film a short persuasive advert to promote the car which they had made.  Exaggeration....powerful adjectives....repetition...alliteration...rhetorical questions were all used to great effect.  Mrs Wilson was tempted to buy them all!

    This project has shown that P6W have many talents- Ferrari and Sir Alan Sugar could learn a lot from these pupils!
  • P4S create digital stories with Scratch Jr

    Thu 11 Feb 2016
    Having learned about different climates in our Weather topic, we used the ScratchJr app on our iPads to create animated stories from different parts of the world. We learned how important it is to give clear instructions in computer programming and were quickly able to create lots of different animations with sound, pictures, conversations and a whole range of movements. Jen from Nerve Belfast helped us to move our characters to different parts of the world (backgrounds) and we loved sharing our animations with the class on the interactive whiteboard. Jen was really impressed with all of our creativity!

    We can't wait to use ScratchJr again in lots of different lessons after half term.
  • P6 & P7 Reading Challenge

    Exciting news!

    We are in the final week of this half term's AR Reading Challenge.  Any pupil who hits their target by Thursday can choose from some fantastic prizes.

    We have:-

    * Frankie and Benny vouchers
    * Ulster Rugby tickets
    (Kindly donated by 2 of our P6 parents)
    * A range of prizes from Sainsbury's who were so impressed by our P6 and 7 readers last term that they have offered to sponsor the rest of the prizes!

    We want to thank Sainsbury's and our parents for their kindness and generosity.

     Hopefully these incentives will inspire our P6 and 7 pupils to keep reading and hit their targets!
